THE FUTURE OF INJECTION SYSTEMS
The Piezo Common Rail (PCR) direct injection system, the first of its kind in the automotive industry, takes common rail technology a step further by advancing the efficiency and power of diesel engines. Developed by Siemens VDO, the PCR system will also help U.S. diesel-powered cars to meet increasingly stringent emission regulations.
HOW DOES A PIEZO COMMON RAIL SYSTEM WORK?
Standard solenoid actuated systems use electrical charges that create a magnetic force to activate. The Siemens PCR system is more efficient because it uses piezoelectric crystals that provide an instantaneous response. These crystals instantly expand when an electric charge is applied, allowing for a much more precise control of fuel flow to the engine. This permits fuel flow from the actuator to be controlled four times more quickly than standard solenoid actuated systems, creating an optimized injection control during the combustion process.
The end result of this quicker injection is an engine that is not only cleaner and quieter, but also more powerful.
HOW DOES A PIEZO COMMON RAIL SYSTEM CONTRIBUTE TO THE ADVANCED CLEAN DIESEL SYSTEM?
By creating a finer and more targeted spray of fuel, the Siemens
PCR system allows for a more precise combustion process that
increases the efficiency of diesel engines, in turn reducing
emissions. With this advanced technology, the Piezo Common Rail
system ensures that new generations of diesel engines will be more
likely to meet the stringent emission regulations that are in place
for 2007. In addition, by creating a more efficient and quieter
combustion cycle, the PCR system adds increased appeal to
diesel-powered passenger cars and light trucks in the North American
market.
